Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions I hear most about custom bars, furniture and cutting boards from Gentle Grain Workshop in South Plainfield, NJ.

How much does a custom bar or piece of furniture cost?

Furniture and bars are quoted individually based on size, wood, finish and complexity. Bar tops start at $1,000, depending on size, wood and finish. Send me what you have in mind and I will follow up with a quote.

How much do custom cutting boards cost?

Ready-made cutting boards in the shop start at $85. Custom-built edge grain boards start at $100 and end grain boards at $250. Ready-made serving trays in the shop start at $110, and fully custom serving trays start at $275. Add-ons such as laser engraving (+$10–25), a juice groove (+$10) and rubber feet (+$5) are extra.

How long does a custom order take?

Cutting boards and serving trays typically take 2–4 weeks from the start of the build. Custom furniture is built to fit, so the timeline is set per piece and included in your quote (often a few months).

What wood can I choose from?

I work with black walnut, cherry, maple, purpleheart, padauk and more, including live-edge slabs for bars and tables. Tell me the look you want and I will recommend species that fit your use and budget.

Do you ship, and where?

Yes. I am based in South Plainfield, NJ and ship across the United States. Larger furniture can be shipped too: the freight or delivery cost depends on the size of the piece and where it is going, and I include it in your quote. Local drop-off is available for reconditioning services.

How do I pay?

A 50% deposit holds your spot once you approve the quote. The remaining balance is due once the piece is complete.

How do I care for my cutting board?

Every piece is finished with food-safe, non-toxic oils and waxes. Hand wash with mild soap and warm water, dry right away, never soak or put it in the dishwasher, and re-oil with a food-safe board conditioner when the wood looks dry.

Can you restore or recondition an existing piece?

Yes. Basic revamps start at $45, minor damage repair and restoration is $60, and heavy restoration starts at $80. Most jobs take 1–2 weeks from the start of the work. See the Additional Services page for details.

Is there a guarantee on your work?

Yes. Every piece is covered by a 5-year craftsmanship guarantee from the date of delivery. If a glue joint fails or the workmanship does not hold up under normal use, I will repair it at no cost to you.

Are your photos edited or AI-generated?
